Chic Essentials // Florals
One of the most popular trends on the runway both for Fall, and this coming Spring are florals. I got this dress at Urban Outfitters during their 40% off sale and was surprised I love it as much as I do. Florals didn’t really seem like my thing but it seemed a little more edgy than the prim florals I am used to seeing. Going head to toe floral can be tricky, but if done right a gal can look fresher than a boutique full of long stem roses. Many women don’t realize that there is a floral pattern or print to suit every shape and size. Follow these tips and tricks to transform from a shrieking violet to a bird of paradise.
Trial & Error: The freshest take this season are prints that incorporate bright colors like flashes of neon. If these colors don’t suit you, steer clear and select more neutral tones. When trying a new look, you are doing just that. So go to your local boutiques, Forever 21, etc. and do some homework. Afterall, we don’t just buy the first bouquet we see, right?!
Dip Your Toes: A great way to ease into floral patterns is a full mini skirt. Think of what shapes look good on you, and find pieces that incorporate that cut, with a floral pattern. I love high-waisted options because you can easily tuck a blouse which also creates shape. Once you have identified which kind of flower girl you are comes the fun part, mixing patterns.
Size Matters: Mixing the size of your floral prints is a great way to create separation and points of interest in your outfit. Try mixing a heavier floral print, with one that is much more sparse.
Color Conscious: Make sure when mixing your prints that you are selecting colors that work in harmony together. Maintaining complimentary shades is key and helps keep you from looking like you got dressed in the dark. I love how A Pair & a Spare Mixed prints, check out their take here.
Neutral Knowhow: Everything in your outfit does not need to don petals. In fact, neutrals are a great way to break up busy patterns. A neutral cardigan for example, tones down a floral ensemble and keeps you warm in an air conditioned office.
Stems and More: Clothing isn’t the only thing to incorporate in this trend. Sometimes subtle nods via accessories like shoes, hosiery etc. are all you need to enhance your outfit. Nordstrom has some great options right now. Check them out here.
While there is method to the madness with this look, the point is to make such simple pairings that when onlookers see you, they ask themselves ‘why didn’t I think of that?’ You don’t have to stick with florals either! Try mixing in stripes, denim even sequins. Just remember…if it feels so wrong its right, it probably is!
