Chic-goes-to-mexico-3When I tell people that I am traveling to Los Cabos for work the unanimous response I get is, “aww lucky!” — and while yes, I consider myself very lucky for the fact that I get to travel for work — this doesn’t quite mean what I think people think it means. When I mention my work-travels, sometimes I wonder if people think I am laying in a cabana somewhere enjoying a piña colada while gazing at the Sea of Cortez.

Um, that would be nice– but in reality, I spend hours running from San Jose to San Lucas, and back again in 97 degree heat + 88% humidity (plus the occasional torrential downpour), all while trying to avoid looking like a drowned cat during my meetings (which is pretty much inevitable).

When packing for work trips abroad, its pretty safe to say that I have experienced my fair share of trial and error–so I wanted to share some of my fave tips to pack for a work trip like a pro.

Rule #1: Don’t Fight Mother Nature

Instead of fighting against the forces of nature, try to play by her rules! I like to wear a lot of black in Los Cabos, and leave the pops of color to my makeup an accessories. Why, you might ask? Once, I packed this gorgeous silk Ella Moss Caftan, but by mid day, I looked like a the wrinkled wrappings from a Victoria’s Secret bag. As a result, I opt for breathable fabrics like Cotton because they do better in humid climates. As for white–just beware that it can rain at a moments notice so you want to be careful that you don’t accidentally enter a white t-shirt contest by mistake.

Rule #2: Always Wear Flats

Whether you are traveling for work or for play…just trust me on this one. The whole point of travel is to explore, so needless to say trying to navigate cobblestone, dirt roads and sand in 5 inch wedges is not a great idea — I know they are probably gorgeous woven espadrilles that look like they are meant for Mexico but this is a trick, don’t break your ankle finding this out the hard way.

Rule #3: Be Decisive

Make a firm decision about either gold or silver hard-wear and accessories because most of the time your outfits and shoes will fall into place according to what accessories you have to dress them up with. While in my every day life I love to pile on the jewelry, I prefer to keep it simple when I travel and avoid carrying too many accessories that could get lost along the way.

While I wrote this article with Los Cabos on the brain, that doesn’t mean that you can’t apply these tips wherever you travel for work around the globe! What are some of your favorite tips and tricks you’ve learned when traveling for work?

J
