Somewhere along the way, basic got a bad wrap.

What once meant the foundation to a solid wardrobe,  now means unsophisticated…and well, basic.

But in a trend-a-second world, where  ‘more is more’ and fuzzy balls are hanging off the arms of the fashion-elite – it can be easy to get caught up, and forget that a closet full of statement pieces do not a wardrobe make.

In fact, you might find that all of those bells and whistles ( i.e. trends ) don’t really go with much, or like…anything – especially when you have a whole closet full of them, so mayyyybe those basics are aren’t so bad after all (ok, Mom)!

What are basics anyways? To me, they are pieces that serve as a blank canvas and fit perfectly – I am a more black on black, distressed denim kind of girl, but you might love maxi-dresses and pencil skirts. When determining your basics, think about the items you tend to gravitate towards – we all have those clutch pieces that we wear waaaaaay too often, seek those pieces out then ask yourself what you love about them.

For me, I tend to gravitate towards my Moto jeans from Topshop, stack bracelets from MINT by Noel and  Balenciaga City Bag – the cool thing about having basics like these, is that adding trend pieces like a choker or off the shoulder top becomes a cinch.

I also love finding pieces every season that are basics with a twist, like this off the shoulder top from Topshop – a basic white T is a wardrobe necessity, but the fun crochet and off the shoulder detail make it way more sassy, I have been able to wear it with denim cutoffs, tucked into a skirt – super versatile and uber comfy (sometimes off the shoulder tops can be annoying but this one stays put)! #winning
