Good Hair Day
Finding your signature hairstyle is key! When your hair is on point — it not only enhances your natural beauty, saves you hours wrangling your coif with bobby pins and styling products, plus it can shed the appearance of 5-10 lbs instantly — great right? Well on the flip side, a bad hairstyle can ruin a girls day…to say the least. That’s why you need to find somewhere where you can get a great haircut every single time, and having a look at this website could help you to do just that.
Whether your trip to the salon is a simple as trimming split ends and getting a deep conditioning treatment — or as complicated as an ombré dye-job and layered clip in hair extensions, having a trusted hair stylist on speed-dial is imperative. In fact, some people take the relationship they have with their hairstylist more seriously than their romantic ones! When searching for your salon soul-mate and signature hairstyle there are some serious factors to consider — here are a few tips to help you decide what hairstyles and stylists make the cut.
Natural Selection
Selecting a hair stylist is not as easy as throwing a dart at a list of names or pulling out a page from a magazine and sashaying into Great Clips. Your stylist should be someone who levels with you about the reality of your hairspirations, consistently produces results you love, is within your price range, and is easy to talk to for upwards of 4 hours.
Like dating, the first stylist you meet may not be the person you commit to — don’t feel bad about that. The stylist’s I have found were primarily discovered through through recommendations from friends or acquaintances whose hair I adore. I see a friends hair — I covet it…and I coax them into sharing the source of their perfected strands.
Reality Bites
I remember the first time I saw Britney Spears platinum blonde locks in the Stronger music video…in fact, I am pretty sure I was on the phone booking a salon appointment that same day. Five hours and several bleach cocktails later — my hair looked like I got in a fight with a witch, a wand, and a calico cat…I still have nightmares. As painful as this lesson was, it has been invaluable because I learned that achieving a certain look takes time and money.
Be realistic with what your hair is like, how much time you have to style it each day, and how much money you want to spend maintaining it. Not only did I have to spend several hundred dollars more on color correction and toning from the initial dye job, but maintaining a color like that is not cheap.
Cutting Edge
Reality does not just apply to the color of your coif. Certain haircuts require more maintenance to keep their shape looking fresh and require a higher frequency of trips to the salon. If you want to limit the amount of money or time you are putting into your hair, be honest with your stylist about these facts and they will help guide you to a style that will meet your needs.
Outside the Box
If you look at my driver’s license picture from the 11th grade, it will be obvious to you that I had definitely taken a DIY approach to my my hair via box-dye. Unlike clothing, or accessories your hair is something you wear — Every. Single. Day. With this in mind, step away from the L’Oreal Preference and ‘Easy to Achieve’ Ombre options at the grocery store, and only trust your tresses to trained professionals.
While tearing out celebrity photos etc. can help you get an idea for what you want your signature hairstyle to look like, keep in mind this is your hair we are talking about. Just because Rihanna is your idol, and you both have green eyes does not mean you will both look ridiculously fabulous in an asymmetrical fire engine red pixie-bob. Your haircut should reflect enhance YOUR natural beauty, not someone else’s!
If you happen to live in San Diego, you are in luck! My girl Carmen at Hyde-Edwards Salon in Little Italy is fabulous! Not only has she managed to tame my unruly mane in a climate that breeds frizz and humidity, but she nails my color conquests every.single.time. — plus, I can seriously talk to her for hours on end without a single second of awkward silence!
In this industry, I have been lucky enough to come across some AH-mazingly talented Hair and Make Up Artists! For all of you Fashion Bloggers out there looking for a good MUA/Hair stylist, another incredible option is Ana Boggiano, she did the hair and make-up styling for the recent collab I did with MINT by Noel and I was blown away about how she glammed me up for the shoot!
If you aren’t local — you could always move here (these ladies are that good!) — if that seems a little extreme, hopefully these tips lead you to a Carmen or Ana of your own!
xx,
J
