Outerwear has been a foreign concept to me for the past 10 years. After a decade of wandering the west, I have returned home to Salt Lake City, and to snowy weather.

One of the silver linings in moving to Utah, is that there are actually seasons here! That means layering and that I actually get to wear some really rad coats. Today I am sharing three classic coats that I added to my wardrobe this winter! Obviously, if I want to keep them in tip top condition forever, I need to treat them right. Keeping them on a coat stand is a must, so I would definitely recommend you have a look for one. My friend recently found one from furniture in fashion, so it may be worth having a look here as well as any of your favourite furniture shops!

The Long Black Coat

The long black coat is much like the little black dress, a minimalistic staple that goes with almost anything. I love slightly oversized collared versions in a heavier wool blend, like the one I’m wearing from PopJulia in this post, because they keep you warm and the collared look of the coat looks great when paried with scarves or layered over a hoodie. I have honestly been wearing mine everywhere since I got it!

The Houndstooth Trench Coat

A houndstooth trench coat is such a classic twist to the iconic staple. Traditionally in khaki or camel, the houndstooth gives the outerwear a 90’s grunge vibe that pairs perfectly with current trends like raw hemmed denim, vinyl skirts and cabbie caps. It also is a super easy to give a more buttoned up look some downtown appeal.

I paired my houndstooth trench coat from PopJulia with my new Quay X Desi oversized aviators, a plain vinyl skirt from Forever 21 + my fave ‘Champagne Problems’ Tee from killemwithchic and some black slouchy boots.

The Teddy Bear Coat

The teddy bear coat is probably one of the most popular coats out there right now! I have seen stylish babes rocking the trend in rust, a dusty rose pink, gray and a myriad of other colors which match their personal style. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if this particular type of coat was really ‘me’, but I wanted to give it a try anyways, so I followed my general rule of thumb…when in doubt buy it in black.

I am glad I trusted my gut, I love my teddy coat in black from PopJulia so much because it is like a low-maintenance version of its posh older sister, the fur (or faux fur) coat. It is dressy, but not prissy and looks just as great when worn with off duty denim as it does dressed up to the 9’s for a night out on the town.
