Move over Annie, there’s a new orphan in town. After February, the steps of the Lincoln Center will no longer serve as the beloved street style scene for New York Fashion Week. Yes, the rumors are true. The F/W 2015 Collections will mark the last fashion shows at the Lincoln Center because The Supreme Court of the State of New York County has ruled that Lincoln Center will not renew the sub-license agreement with IMG Fashion, which expires in February.

To break it down, The Supreme Court basically disagrees with the way Lincoln Center has been using the park and as a result re-defined the Lincoln’s Center’s relationship with Damrosch Park requiring any future changes involving Lincoln Center (ie. Hositng events), to be approved by the Parks Department as well as local community organizations.

Lincoln Center started to receive complaints starting in 2013 which led to CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg, Mayor Bloomberg and Steven Kolb, the CEO of CFDA,  masterminding a solution known as the Culture Shed which will be a mixed use space at the Hudson Yards and hopefully become a permanent home to Fashion Week. The only problem is…the venue is not scheduled to open until 2017 at the earliest.

Many designers have already taken their collections off site already, Von Furstenberg included, but 69 designers still showed in the tents last season, so while the decision to relocate Fashion Week doesn’t surprise me,  the abruptness of the Supreme Court’s deadline does.  In February of 2009 Bryant Park officials made a similar decision after 16 years of hosting the event citing interference with other park activities, but gave them 3 more seasons to relocate.

To be honest, the only time I have visited the Lincoln Center is during Fashion Week and have no idea what Damrosch Park even looks like when it is not the “Lobby”,  “Theater”, “Salon”, “Pavillion”, or “Hub”. I have come to know and love the lay of the land around 59th street not to mention Fashion Week traditions such as trips to Laduree, and Bendel’s inbetween the shows. Even though I am bummed to give up such amazing pastimes,  I look forward to savoring the last season at Lincoln Center in February and wait with baited breath as they sort out the new location  so I can begin scouting out new traditions.
