Perspective.
I recently stumbled across an article on Popsugar.com on one of my fave topics – personal style, and it was so well written I had to share. Simply put, ‘chic women never bow to trends.’ Now, does this mean ‘stylish’ women never buy pieces that are on-trend? Of course not, but it does mean they think twice before buying a fuzzy ball and sticking it on their purse just because “everyone else is”.
Knowing yourself is perhaps the best thing you can do to achieve personal style, because regardless of what is currently in stores you know what you will really wear, and what will sit in your closet collecting dust with tags still in tact. In my opinion there are two particular style-schools that are prime examples of such a mentality -French women’s style, and Models Off Duty.
French women in general, possess a je ne sais quoi about them – they know what suits there frame and stick with it. Fashion with a capital F is not the focus as much as function is, and there is much more of a laissez-faire approach because they already know what they love and they have these items or ‘personal style uniform’ in multiples.
Models are another style-set I truly admire, from Natalie Westling and Kelly Mittendorf to Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne, these young women arrive on the scene with their own personal style and while they wear the most coveted trends on the runway, it is what they are wearing when leaving the shows that I love. Cara in her signature red beanie, or Kendall and her adoration for activewear, these women set trends – they don’t follow them.
Having adopted this philosophy, I find myself having much less in my closet – but find much more to wear! Make sure to check out the full Popsugar.com article, and don’t forget to shop the look below — that is if, and only if it suits you!
xx,
J
