Dressing according to the trend-forecast can be a very costly and time consuming endeavor for many reasons.

There is always a new trend to try, from raw hems to bell bottom jeans and flat-forms to sneakers, they come and go so quickly that by the time you are in line for the hottest ‘It’ bag/lipstick/app/phone, a newer ‘It’ item is already being stocked on the shelves in its place.

So how do you keep up?! The answer is a lot more simple than you may think…you don’t.

In a trend a minute world, you really have to pick your battles, and for this I have a very simple rule of thumb – if you don’t love it, leave it.

Side stepping the trends you don’t love saves you a ton of money, and leaves oodles of room in your closet for clothes that you will actually wear!

I mean, how many of us are guilty of a closet full of clothes, yet we only wear 5 items or less on rotation?! I know I was…that is until I got tired of hauling unworn clothes to My Sister’s Closet or Goodwill.

Now that is not to say that I don’t ever indulge in a good trend piece – the major difference? I am not buying the item because it is ‘on trend’, I am buying it because I actually like it…sounds crazy right?!

Take camouflage for example – it’s all the rage right now, does that mean I am wearing it because Fashion with a capital F is telling me to? Nope. I love camo, always have always will. That being said, I am super stoked that Fashion is having a brief love affair with the print because that means one thing every girl loves to hear…options! 🙂

It can also be a good idea to force yourself to buy only investment pieces. For example, if you need a new pair of shoes, try to buy classic pieces in traditional colors like black, white, or grey that can be worn time and time again. A friend of mine told me that when she goes to the best shop in Australia for ecco shoes, she only ever buys pairs that she knows she will wear season after season.

Although it can be tempting to hop on board with the latest trends, where basic necessities like shoes are concerned, instead try to buy timeless items like white sneakers, or smart black boots that will last.

Knowing your style, and what you love is a great way to side-step trends that aren’t you – and stock pile on the ones that are!

The best part about this, is that trends are revolving, so chances are what ever it is you love will come into style eventually – even crocs.

So let yo’ freak flag fly and buy what you want, wear what you want and stop worrying about rules – worry about how you feel when you are wearing something!

Now, in case camo is your jam, I am sharing some of my fave pieces for you below – and if it’s not…don’t sweat it, another trend is right around the corner – I promise!
