Thrift shopping definitely takes some getting used to. Especially if you are the type of person who is used to shopping at the mall or online via major retailers who primarily feature up to the minute trends and offer multiple size runs of the same item. Personally I LOVE to shop second hand because not only am I helping save the planet by helping these clothes avoid the landfill, but I am also more than likely going to be the only person rocking my outfit! Learning how to thrift really lets you refine and define your personal style rather than letting stores tell you what’s in.

If you are anything like me, you like a good trend now and again but hate spending your hard earned money on clothes that might not be your style. Thrifting is such a great way to try on trends without breaking the bank, because they often cost a fraction of the price of retail. You can even shop online and avoid the hassle of sifting through racks upon racks of stuff and find some incredible deals on designer threads and other unique pieces no one else will have.

In today’s post, I am covering a few of my favorite timeless trends you can pretty much always find when you go thrifting, plus fun ways to style them. I have done some of the hunting for you and linked some of my favorite pieces to help you recreate the look via Goodwill San Fransisco!

P.S. If you haven’t seen my thrifting for beginners video, make sure start there because it can help you with some great tips on how to approach thrifting both in store and online!

BEADS, SEQUINS, AND FRINGE

Beads, fringe and sequins are some of my favorite textures to score second hand. They just don’t make ’em like the used to, so when I find a truly vintage piece that is in tact, it makes my heart sing. I love beaded vests because they are such a fun way to add a boho touch to a fairly modern look.

Insider Tip: Make sure to really inspect these kinds of garments and read descriptions carefully online. I tend to skip pieces that are missing some of their embellishments because they tend to unravel easily one they are missing beads etc.

THE DESIGNER DRESS

The dress section is one of my favorite places to score big when I am thrifting! You can find so many amazing pieces and I can’t tell you how many times I find them with the tags still attached!

Insider Tip: When you are shopping online look for the abbreviation NWT which stands for New With Tags which means it hasn’t been worn before!

LIVED IN DENIM

A perfectly worn in denim jacket, oversized chambray tops, a good pair of denim cutoffs, lived in Levi’s – the options are endless. If you are looking for a great place to test the waters, denim is a safe bet. In most cases, denim is like fine wine and only gets better with age.

Insider Tip: If you are looking for a way to update a denim piece, try adding some patches, or embroidery. It’s a great way to elevate a thrift store score without spending a ton of money.

THE ULTIMATE STATEMENT JEWELRY

Jewelry is one of my favorite places to score big when I am thrifting! I have found so many cool statement necklaces, earrings, and rings to add to my treasure trove over the years. It’s also great because if you are newer to thrifting you don’t need to worry about finding your size nearly as much as you do with clothing!

Insider Tip: Think beyond what a piece looks like now, if you are even the slightest bit crafty (or even if you aren’t), you can reinvent a piece fairly easily with a quick trip to the craft store.

THE BLAZER

A blazer is a must in every woman’s closet. It is the perfect way to instantly elevate a jeans and t-shirt look, or dress down a fancy dress. There are so many textures, fabrics and patterns there is literally something out there to suit every woman’s style…literally!

Insider Tip: Also check out the men’s department in thrift stores and online when shopping for a good blazer. There are typically a ton of smaller sizes which can lend a fun slightly oversized shape on the female figure!
